Overcome Procrastination by Slaying the Dragon of Distraction

by Monique Gallagher on September 12, 2009

You know the feeling. There is an important project to work on that you know if you complete it you will be able to relax and breathe, let alone the money you could make from it, but you find yourself unable to overcome procrastination.  Doing everything else, but working on it.  Why???

We are not a one thing, we have multiple inner lives that work constantly trying to help us with what we say we want.  If there is incongruence in your values or beliefs and your conscious mind, the values and beliefs….the invisible part will win out.  It ALWAYS does.  Here is a small action guide for the article “Slaying the Dragon of Distraction; Maintaining Focus”.  I hope you enjoy it.

Three Ways you can Overcome

Procrastination aka the Dragon

1.Distraction keeps us focused on things other then the problem. – which if we are successful at our distraction it will likely grow into a deeply rooted habit or worse yet an addiction and keep you further away from what you really want to accomplish.

2. Keeps us hiding – not moving forward on the very thing in our life we say we want that could make a significant difference in our life.

3. Keeps us from experiencing failure because we are holding back.  We dabble at our project or goal and never know the joy of success or the learning that will come from trying to accomplish something.

Until you know what need is being met at a core level it can still operate at the unconscious level and can and will sabotage your results.

So how do you get to your reasons?

The steps:

1.    Think about an important project or goal you really, really want to complete or have a successful resolution.

2.    Focus on a quiet place in your body, for people who have an inner anchor point focus on your Inner Anchor Point for other’s focus on the area around your heart.

3.    Then ask inside the following question and listen intently for an answer “how does it serve me to remain on the fence, distracted, unfocused by avoiding doing xyz?  Basically, what need is being met by not moving forward on xyz?”  Or if you know what distraction method you have used in the past to avoid working on things, ask “how does focusing on xyz serve me?”

4.    Take what you get and write it down. Ask deeper questions if you need more clarity.

Let me give you a personal example:

1.    How does focusing on my son going to karate classes so he earns his black belt serve me?

“Keeps me feeling like I am helping and doing something and being a good mother by helping him avoid regrets if

he gives up after 5 years of classes.”

2.    How does that distraction harm me?

“It keeps him resisting and pushing against me instead of pushing himself… which in turn makes him not want to

spend time with me.

It also keeps me from seeing what I need to work on and fix in my own self.  I delude myself thinking I am achieving

something by using my time and attention to find solutions for him.

-    My brain likes to have a problem to focus on as it thinks it is being productive.”

3.    What is one action I could take that would move me forward in this area I have permitted distraction to take me off course?

“Detach from the outcome, whether he completes his black belt or not, it is up to him.”

4.    Then check to see if you are comfortable actioning this

Solution.  If it feels good, great, you are good to go.

In my personal example above, I got a clear “no” when I did this exercise.  I seemed unable to let go of the idea that letting go of the 5 year investment in Karate would instill in him a “failure and regret”.  I felt in my core, it was still important to support him in this way.  I then moved to a process which I teach in my program.  The “Genius Idea Clearing” process comes up with 3 ideally suited action items that is for my highest good on a conscious level and unconscious level. You know that if we don’t ensure congruence between our brain and our inner beliefs and values, we may think something is a good idea but we still won’t act upon it.  The solution has to be congruent at all levels, your internal beliefs and values and your conscious mind has to be comfortable implementing it to effectively Slay the Dragon of Distraction.
